The Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Bertha Centre) at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business (UCT GSB) was established in 2011 as a pioneering centre in Africa dedicated to research, teaching, dialogue and support of social innovations that positively change and challenge rules, policies, technologies, structures, beliefs and institutions. The senior manager will have both internal and external responsibilities, ranging from strategic management (implementing strategy and reviewing objectives) to overseeing operations (budgeting, planning, reporting) and to fostering key stakeholder relationships (local and global). In this newly established role, the candidate will partner closely with the director to manage a rapidly growing team delivering on pioneering projects and research in South Africa and on the African continent. Importantly, the successful candidate will have the personal skills, sensitivity, and confidence to tap into the talent each member brings to the Bertha Centre.

Responsibility

1. Strategic and operational management and planning

Work in partnership with the director and the initiative leads, contribute to the development and implementation of the Bertha Centre’s strategic goals and objectives and establish new processes and approaches to achieve them. Identify opportunities for the Bertha Centre to maximise synergies across the Centre’s key initiatives.

2. Systems and reporting

Develop and review the Bertha Centre’s internal systems and procedures. Compile and submit reports for the Bertha Centre’s Steering Committee (and other stakeholders), showing progress against annual objectives. Develop monitoring and evaluation metrics for the Bertha Centre to track key impact measurements. Oversight of Bertha Centre’s key initiatives, ensuring their sustainability and ensuring each meets required objectives.

3. Annual budgets/financial management/personnel management

Coordinate annual operational plan and budget in line with each initiative’s objectives. Oversee and manage costs against approved budget.  Assist in coordinating grant proposals from the initiatives. Oversee Human Resources processes and liaise with director and initiative leads regarding individual personnel HR needs.

4. Stakeholder relationship management

Coordinate relationships at centre from a CRM perspective. Assist in maintaining and building the centre’s database of important stakeholders – including industry, university leadership, government and civil society.

Requirements

Master’s degree (or equivalent)

Ideally 10 years of professional experience, including at least five years in a managerial capacity

Strong organisational, communication and interpersonal skills

Strong track record managing complex projects
