The Department of Visual Arts at Stellenbosch University is internationally recognised for its training and development of visual artists and designers with an emphasis on cross-disciplinary encounters. Emphasis is placed on the integration of conceptual and technical processes, engaging visual art and design practices as critical research methodologies, and the nurturing of specialist and transferable skills. In this environment, visual art and design are understood as critical practices that provide nuanced perspectives on cultural, economic, and socio-political challenges, and drive innovation and sustainable futures. 

Duties:

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research supervision in Fine Art (Print Media) as primary subject area, but within a visual arts environment that promotes and facilitates critical interactions between art and design;
  • Developing and maintaining competitive standards in Fine Art practice through the specific application of Printmaking and related media, engaging with emerging trends and innovations in contemporary artistic practice;
  • Coordinating and managing the print studios;
  • Participating in curriculum planning and delivery of the Visual Arts and Design programme;
  • Participating in departmental administration, including postgraduate programme coordination (e.g. Honours in illustration);
  • Producing individual research output, as well as contributing to departmental creative research projects and activities;
  • Promoting innovation, creative and critical thinking among undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Visual or Fine Arts, or an equivalent qualification (must have the relevant qualification at commencement of duties);
  • Proven knowledge of the broad field of contemporary Printmaking, inter alia advanced conceptual and technical understanding of various traditional, contemporary and digital print media, including intaglio processes, lithography, screen-printing and related processes, and curating/archiving print media;
  • Skill and experience in the training and teaching of Visual Arts at a higher education level;
  • Proven experience or training in postgraduate supervision;
  • Proven experience with online learning platforms, and the ability to develop and deliver hybrid learning content;
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within creative research disciplines;
  • Sound administrative and communication skills;
  • The ability to function in a multilingual environment.

  • Professional experience in the visual arts sector.
