Role Purpose

The Frontshop Assistant supports store operations by maintaining merchandising standards and providing efficient customer service at the checkout. Employees are responsible for ensuring products are well stocked, correctly priced, and presented neatly on shelves. They also assist with back-of-store tasks such as stock organization, rotation, and general housekeeping. The role contributes to the smooth operation of the store while helping customers find the products they need and providing a friendly, professional service.

Key Responsibilities

Frontshop Assistants perform a combination of customer service, merchandising, and operational duties. These include:

  • Ensuring shelves are fully stocked and products are neatly presented
  • Monitoring stock for sell-by dates and restocking when necessary
  • Handling out-of-stock queries and following up promptly
  • Correctly storing delivered stock and keeping the storeroom organized
  • Maintaining merchandise displays, labels, and pricing, reporting discrepancies to management
  • Processing all purchases accurately, including cash, cards, vouchers, coupons, and loyalty cards
  • Accepting authorized returns and exchanges, and processing loyalty program transactions
  • Ensuring cash flow accuracy and placing daily takings in the drop safe
  • Rotating stock regularly and following Dis-Chem stock control procedures
  • Assisting with stock counting, general stocktaking, and reporting damaged or expired stock
  • Loading and off-loading stock and preparing packaging for disposal or storage
  • Establishing professional relationships with customers and providing courteous assistance
  • Supporting training of new and current team members
  • Adhering to housekeeping, health and safety, and uniform policies
  • Reporting suspicious or inappropriate behaviour to management

Qualifications and Experience

  • Essential: Grade 12 – Matric or Senior Certificate
  • 0 – 6 months retail experience required
  • Advantageous: 1 year retail experience and certification in Retail Business Management

Skills and Competencies

Successful candidates should demonstrate the following essential skills:

  • Knowledge of retail operations and administration
  • Problem-solving and escalation awareness
  • Basic arithmetic and numeracy skills
  • Effective verbal communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to follow procedures and take personal responsibility for quality and timeliness

Advantageous skills include basic computer literacy (Word, Excel, Outlook) and familiarity with SAP.
