Job Overview and Responsibilities
• Assist the Shedman with locomotive shunting movements in the yard
• Support safe and efficient locomotive handling within the shed area
• Ensure locomotives and fueling areas remain clean and safe for operations
• Assist in allocating and delivering locomotives according to maintenance and train schedules
• Carry out shunting instructions based on operational rules and safety procedures
• Use hand signals to guide locomotive movements where required
• Perform coupling and uncoupling of locomotives, including airbrakes and jumper cables
• Inspect fuel levels and assist with refuelling diesel locomotives when required
• Operate points for locomotive movement according to safety work procedures
• Secure locomotives by applying hand brakes and wheel scotches
• Conduct basic inspections of auxiliary equipment
• Identify and report unsafe conditions on tracks, locomotives, or overhead systems
• Maintain housekeeping standards in the shed and operational areas
• Follow all safety regulations, railway operating rules, and compliance procedures
• Support safe movement and storage of locomotives in the yard
Requirements and Skills
• Grade 10 or relevant operational experience of up to 6 years
• Willingness to undergo formal Shed Assistant training
• Ability to pass medical and safety fitness assessments
• Basic understanding of yard operations and rail safety procedures
• Strong attention to detail and situational awareness
• Good communication skills in English
• Ability to follow instructions accurately under supervision
• Physical fitness to perform manual and outdoor tasks
• Ability to work shifts and extended hours when required
• Strong focus on safety, discipline, and compliance
• Good coordination and reaction ability for operational tasks
