As a Post Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant, you will work under the supervision of a responsible pharmacist to provide pharmaceutical care, dispense medication accurately, assist customers with medicine-related queries and ensure compliance with the standards set by the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC). You will also play a key role in maintaining stock control, processing prescriptions and supporting the efficient operation of the dispensary.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines and scheduled substances.
• Assist with the preparation, compounding and manufacturing of non-sterile medicines according to approved procedures.
• Repackage medicines in accordance with standard operating procedures.
• Assist with the distribution and control of Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines.
• Support the ordering of medicines and scheduled substances up to Schedule 6 as instructed by authorised personnel.
• Assist with reading, preparing and processing prescriptions after pharmacist evaluation.
• Capture prescription details accurately and verify patient information on the system.
• Pick, pack, label and prepare medication accurately while checking common dosages and drug interactions.
• Provide patients with clear instructions on the correct use of medication.
• Stay updated on medical aid procedures and dispensing requirements.
• Ensure all medication is checked and signed off by the responsible pharmacist.
• Assist patients with dispensary, self-medication and front shop enquiries.
• Follow up on prescription tracking reports and patient appointments.
• Explain medical aid costs and prescription claims to patients.
• Promote good health by providing accurate healthcare information.
• Process medical aid claims and correct rejected prescriptions.
• Assist with authorisations for chronic, HIV, AIDS and oncology medication.
• Maintain and update customer profiles accurately.
• Report low stock levels, stock discrepancies and stock errors.
• Receive and merchandise dispensary stock according to FEFO principles.
• Participate in bi-annual stock takes.
• Maintain effective stock, cash and asset control.
Requirements and Skills
• Grade 12 or Matric certificate.
• Basic Pharmacist Assistance qualification.
• Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
• Working experience using Unisolv.
• Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Sound numerical skills.
• Strong command of English and a second language.
• Willing and able to work retail hours.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Good problem-solving abilities.
• Trustworthy, honest and professional.
• Ability to work well under pressure.
• Effective time management and organisational skills.
• Team player with a patient-focused approach.
Advantageous qualifications and experience include:
• Knowledge of retail or FMCG operations.
• Ability to speak a third language.
• Experience with SAP and E-Scripting systems.
• Knowledge of drug and family planning products.
• Knowledge of complementary medicine.
