Job description

This position requires a strong individual with excellent numerical skills and an ability to think critically about population distributions, target markets and the ideal sample composition for surveys. The sampling methodologist will be involved in providing input, advice and support to quantitative researchers and statisticians during proposal phase as well as project setup where quota or probability samples are designed

Key performance areas:

Ensuring delivery of a standardised sampling platform which aligns with field and research operational requirements
Critical evaluation of research requests and target markets specified, considering if sample specifications match the target market and making recommendations to the alternative
Change management for tracking studies and assessment of potential population adjustments
Using tools and software packages such as Excel, SAS, Telmar TNT+ to extract population information from multiple sources such as the SAARF® AMPS® survey (All media and Product Survey), Census and other databases
Utilising such population information to design sample grids and setting up field contact and update sheets for operational use
Ability to write and adjust scripts in the SAS or similar environment to ensure the maintenance and enhancements of population and spatial data assets, as well as assisting to improve process automation
Interaction with external suppliers of population information and ensuring that information is kept up to date
Overseeing a GIS specialist in printing of maps and sample point forms and assessment of GIS software and system requirements together with such a specialist
Assessment of field updates where necessary to assist research and field with recommendations of best achieving specific goals
Ensuring a high standard of quality through implementing quality check measures and processes
Knowledge and skills transfer

Requirements

Education

Preference will be given to applicants with a tertiary education, especially demonstrating numerical and critical thinking ability, with background in market research and/or sampling.

Competencies and experience

Critical attention to detail
Advanced numerical skills
Proficient in Excel including the use of Functions, Referencing and Pivot tables
Ability to use Boolean operators and numerical operations correctly to ensure that correct subsets of populations are selected
SAS knowledge
Knowledge of Census and SAARF® AMPS® survey (All media and Product Survey), Census
Proficiency in Word and PowerPoint
Knowledge of GIS software, with experience in ArcView and MAPInfo an advantage
Some statistical background would be an advantage
Interpersonal skills
Effective time and project management
Communication skills – both verbal and written
Ability to work under pressure
