- To initiate and break exclusive news stories and features for the paper;
- Liaises with the news editor on stories to be written;
- Initiates story ideas by communicating with contacts built up over the years and has a sound grasp of current affairs;
- Makes telephone calls, responds to emails and personally visits contacts;
- Follows up on story ideas and keeps a long term diary;
- Thinks visually and advises news desk/photographic of photograph opportunities;
- Produces accurate, clearly written copy and adheres to set deadlines;
- Acts on story tip-offs from the public;
- Fills in wherever necessary – an element of standing by for anything that may crop up;
- Abides by the decisions made by the department head, or, in his/her absence, a senior editorial executive.
Requirements
- Excellent command of the English language. The ability to write clearly and quickly;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. A team player who can also fly solo;
- Must be able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines;
- Tenacity, a critical thinker who goes the extra mile and has a passion for news;
- Must be prepared to work on Saturdays and public holidays.
Personal Skills/Attributes
- Must have a minimum of five years’ experience in covering news and preferably a tertiary qualification that adds value to your career in news;
- Must have proven ability to break news;
- Must have credible and provable contacts;
- Drivers’ licence
