Purpose of the Internship

The Industrial Engineering University Graduate internship aims to develop core skills in production efficiency, process improvement, and workflow optimization. Interns work under the guidance of experienced Industrial Engineers, assisting with administrative tasks, project identification, and improvement initiatives. This role offers exposure to production planning, quality control, waste reduction, and ergonomics studies, providing a comprehensive foundation for a career in industrial engineering within the agricultural and food processing sector.

Key Responsibilities

Interns will gain experience in multiple areas of industrial engineering and production management. Core responsibilities include:

• Designing efficient production processes to eliminate waste and maximize resource utilization
• Identifying potential projects to improve processing efficiency
• Conducting continuous production need assessments to maintain operational effectiveness
• Performing ergonomic studies across departments
• Driving the Continuous Improvement Program (20 Keys) and coordinating with key leaders
• Following up on action plans and goal achievement, providing guidance where necessary
• Streamlining workflows to reduce cycle times and prevent bottlenecks
• Ensuring safety, quality, production, and cost targets are met
• Eliminating non-value-added activities and balancing production lines for maximum throughput
• Completing all allocated training interventions as directed by the manager
• Mentoring and coaching staff to maintain standards and processes
• Performing general administrative tasks within the Engineering Department

Requirements and Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum criteria to be considered for this internship:

• Bachelor’s Degree (NQF7) or National Diploma (NQF6) in Industrial Engineering
• Must be unemployed and seeking practical experience for the first time
• No prior participation in internship or graduate programs
• Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Office
• Understanding of process mapping (Value Stream Mapping, SIPOC, Flow Charts)
• Knowledge of waste identification (7+ wastes – DOWNTIME)
• Familiarity with Kaizen facilitation, root cause analysis, and statistical process control (SPC)
• Willingness to work overtime, including weekends, when required
