General Assistant Opportunity – Building Department at Brights Hardware

Brights Hardware in Blackheath, Western Cape, is seeking a motivated General Assistant for the Building Department. This permanent role is ideal for entry level candidates who enjoy working in a fast paced retail environment and delivering outstanding customer service.

The General Assistant ensures the Yard operates efficiently, stock is accurately managed, and customers receive exceptional service. By maintaining cleanliness, supporting deliveries, and assisting with stock handling, you play a key role in customer satisfaction and the store’s overall performance.

Purpose of the Role

The main purpose of this role is to provide excellent service to both external and internal customers, including delivery and transfer drivers. You will:

  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Accurately load and transfer products for customers
  • Ensure stock is managed efficiently to avoid loss or damage
  • Support the Yard operations to enhance customer satisfaction and encourage repeat business

Key Responsibilities

As a General Assistant, your daily tasks will include:

Stock Handling and Loading

  • Load customers’ vehicles, delivery trucks, and transfer trucks promptly and accurately
  • Ensure stock is properly stacked and counted
  • Assist with pulling stock for transfers
  • Report any stock shortages or breakages

Customer Service

  • Assist customers with friendly service and product knowledge
  • Bag heavy items such as stone and sand
  • Maintain good communication with colleagues and customers

Housekeeping and Yard Management

  • Sweep and maintain tidiness in work areas
  • Participate in perpetual stocktakes
  • Perform any delegated work related tasks to ensure Yard efficiency

Requirements

Candidates should meet the following requirements:

  • Matric or equivalent qualification
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a similar role preferred
  • Ability to deliver excellent customer service
  • Numerical skills to count stock accurately
  • Able to work independently and within a team
  • Strong discipline, motivation, and ability to handle pressure
  • Effective verbal communication skills
  • Physical fitness and stamina
