Overview of the Trainee Train Assistant Role
The Trainee Train Assistant supports the Train Driver in operating locomotives safely and efficiently. You will work with different types of trains, including heavy haul, high-speed, and freight trains.
The main goal is to ensure cargo reaches its destination on time and in good condition. You will assist in preparation, operation, and monitoring of trains during each shift.
This role requires discipline, attention to detail, and strong physical and mental fitness.
Key Responsibilities and Daily Duties
Your work will involve both operational and safety-related tasks. Core responsibilities include:
- Signing on duty and preparing locomotives for operation
- Checking and placing required equipment on the train
- Assisting with locomotive start-up and brake testing
- Preparing communication devices such as radios and telemeters
- Conducting pre-trip inspections of the train and wagons
- Assisting with coupling and uncoupling of locomotives
- Executing shunting activities in yards and sidings
- Monitoring signals and train movement during trips
- Supporting the Train Driver during emergencies
- Protecting the train and ensuring safe operations at all times
- Completing administrative duties such as train journals
You will also provide feedback to the Train Driver regarding any issues during the journey.
Training and Certification Requirements
This is a trainee role, which means you will undergo both theoretical and practical training. You must complete all required training modules to qualify as a certified Train Assistant.

Minimum Requirements for Applicants
To qualify for this position, you must meet strict entry criteria due to safety requirements in rail operations.

- Grade 12 with Mathematics and or Physical Science
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Minimum height of 1.6 metres
- Good physical, mental, hearing, and vision fitness
- Ability to carry heavy objects
- Willingness to work shifts and long hours
You must also pass medical tests and psychomotor assessments during the selection process.
